Professor Zykin, AGP partner, took part in the IV Annual RAA Conference
Ivan Zykin, partner of Andrey Gorodissky & Partners, took part in the IV Annual Conference of the Russian Arbitration Association at Marriott Grand Hotel in Moscow on April 20, 2017. He spoke at the session dedicated to the women’s role in commercial arbitration, focusing on the key question: “Does female arbitrators need special approach?” The session participants discussed all the “pros” or “cons”, and the experts summed up the results.
The information provided by the speakers shows that currently there are less women than men among arbitrators in international commercial arbitration. According to Professor Zykin’s calculation, the actual ratio of female arbitrators at ICAC at the RF CCI is comparable with their ratio in the arbitrators involved in international commercial disputes, which is approx. 20-25%. From this point of view, ICAC is quite representative among the leading international arbitration centers. The information provided during the discussion also clearly shows the last decades’ trend of growing amount of females participating in arbitration, which was called a positive process by the session participants.
The discussion resulted in a conclusion that both women and men may act as arbitrators with equal success. A person’s gender cannot be regarded as an obstacle to the performance of arbitrator’s functions, because it is one’s professional competencies that should serve as basic criteria.
